Red Roof Meat Company Newsletter: Difference in Opinion

FARM NEWSLETTER – 29 MAY 2023

DIFFERENCE IN OPINION

I might have thrown around some disparaging remarks with regards to Walmart.  It’s like me to do that… and perfectly acceptable. It’s also absolutely OK for others to disagree with me; even take offense.  That happened recently, and I get it.  Walmart pushes prices down as far as possible, and in this Country, the big of big box stores are a lifeline to families trying to keep it all together while pay checks fall behind fuel, food, housing and medical costs.

I expect most people are familiar with the billboard coming into town that asks, “Why are one in six children in this country food insecure?” I’m here to suggest that opening another half dozen Walmarts across the county won’t help in this matter.  In time, on our current trajectory, the Walmarts will no longer be the final refuge of the poorer amongst us.  What then?  That’s for a political argument.

As for an economic solution?  It is simple:  We, as a community, need to invest our profits back into our community.  You ever wondered why the Chinatowns that exist in every major city are always so wealthy?  Easy.  Every dollar that enters their community circulates and circulates, never to leave…well, almost.  Walmart is the antithesis of this.

We’re busy rebuilding the local food economy here in Fremont County – like no other place in the country.  This build-out will require a great amount of investment in production, and not least of all people.  Walmart can’t help us here; they are built for enrichening stockholders, not communities.  No, we’re on our own, and the sooner we understand that, the better off we all will be.

Regards,

Steve
