FARM NEWSLETTER – 15 MAY 2023

THE BEEF MARKET

Live animal prices are higher now than 2014, or so I’m told by folks who know such things.  And, since the cattle herd in the U.S. is down some 60%, it will take years to recover.  

My neighbors are receiving high prices for their culls - $1500 per head, and $3 a pound for their five-hundred-weight steers.  These are very good prices, for an industry that has been beaten senseless by the global commodity market.  This industry is, I will remind you, largely populated by ranchers who weathered a very tough winter and might be seriously contemplating liquidating their herd and retiring.  

Can’t blame them.

We’ve been warned.  One third of U.S. farmers are over the age of 65.  Many of them are deep into their 70’s. Who will step in to take over these farms and ranches?  Adult children of the retiring rancher?  The Bill Gates of the world that would then hire managers for these operations?  Or, perhaps, we are about to witness the new West with a lot fewer cows and cattlemen.  Was that titled, “30 by ‘30”?  

I, for one, can’t see how we avoid a disruption in the cattle industry.  Then again, I’m oft mistaken.  We’ll see soon enough.

Dear Herdshare Owners,

Just a few things:

 

Little farm update – we have 23 lambs and 16 calves on the ground with 2 more ewes and 3 cows left to deliver for the season. 

 

Details for the 2^nd Annual Herdshare Farm Party!

1:00 – 1:30 Bottle feed lamb

1:30 – 3:00 Farm/pasture/animal tours (we may split into groups for these depending on the turnout)

3:00 – 4:00 Lunch - beef or chicken tacos. This meal will have a gluten-free option available, please let us know if there are other allergies we should be aware of.

If you would like to buy meat/eggs/produce while on farm, sales will begin at 4:00pm. 

Please feel free to bring a friend to the farm party.

 

We still have some seed potatoes (both reds and Yukon’s) available for free. If you would like some, please let us know!

 

For the Riverton folks I will be at the Riverton Wednesday Farmers Market on May 17^th from 5 – 7 pm at Riverton City Park. 

For the Lander folks I can deliver to the corner of 2^nd St. and Main St. at 9am on Saturday the 20^th.

Our farm has been very fortunate to attract a number of wonderful customers who share the same vision as us in terms of values…not simply value. We also recognize that this market relationship is not for everybody. If that’s the case with you, please let us know. We’ll be happy to buy back your share and reimburse your five dollars – or even a pound of ground beef if you prefer – and take you off our email list.

 

I have assorted beef cuts and dog treats available at Fremont Local Market (Open 10am – 6pm Tuesday through Sunday).
