Red Roof Meat Company Newsletter - 3 July 2023

FARM NEWSLETTER – 3 JUL 2023

MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK

We processed 80-plus chickens this weekend.  Most, but not all, were picked up at the farm by herd share customers.  This is the first batch of the season with many more to go, but I would advise against waiting too long to fill your freezer as we have every reason to expect them all to go very quickly.  These were beautiful pasture raised birds in the four-to-six-pound range.

But what I really wanted to address was that “We” part.  There were five of us processing chickens, and despite all the labor-saving devices we utilized – cones (not stumps), a scalding tank and electric defeatherer - there remained a good deal of labor!  Really, a whole lot of labor.   Morgan, DeeAnn and I can knock out a lot of birds in a day, but this weekend we were blessed to have a few herdshare customers helping out.  What a difference the extra hands make; all the difference in the world.

I’ve often told the story about children in our Virginia neighborhood drawn into our yard to help pick crabs or process pecans.  There is something in our DNA that causes us humans to enjoy this coupling of productivity to socialization.   I remember, very fondly, shucking peas with my grandma and cousins when I was very young.  Really, if you feel a need to reconnect with the land and to the people who populate it with you, you can do no better than throwing in to help.  Or asking for help.  One guy building a fence is hard work.  Three guys building fence is fun!  Five guys and gals working together with a common purpose is joy.

We will look for ways to get more people on our farm, not just as customers, but as participants in this small family farm experience.  Lord knows we have the work, and we would love the opportunity to spend more time with our wonderful customers to enjoy their company.

Regards,

Steve

Dear Herdshare Owners,

Just a few things:

For the Riverton folks I will be at the Riverton Wednesday Farmers Market on July 5th from 5-7 pm at Riverton City Park.

For the Lander folks my mom will cover for me at the Lander Valley Farmers Market on July 10th from 9-11:30 at the corner of 3rd and Main St.

NOTE* We are now on Facebook!!

Please like and follow us at Red Roof Meat Company!

Our farm has been very fortunate to attract a number of wonderful customers who share the same vision as us in terms of values…not simply value. We also recognize that this market relationship is not for everybody. If that’s the case with you, please let us know. We’ll be happy to buy back your share and reimburse your five dollars – or even a pound of ground beef if you prefer – and take you off our email list.

I do have assorted beef cuts and dog treats available at Fremont Local Market, but these packages are priced higher to account for the commission at the store. Ordering here through email guarantees you the lowest price.

(Open 10am – 6pm Tuesday through Sunday).

524 E. Main St. in Riverton – The old Flea Market Building
