Red Roof Meat Company Newsletter: "Farm Kids" - March 27, 2023

I’m thinking about when I was a sea-going officer serving aboard any number of cutters.  Every month or so we’d welcome aboard new sailors, fresh out of boot camp, and excited beyond measure (that is, scared silly) walking up the brow for the first time.  Over my career I met several hundred of these young men, and most of them I greeted with two questions.  First, “Where you from?” followed by, “What’d you do there?”

If he hailed from South Dakota, or Texas, or Oklahoma or any such places, this was a good start.  And, if he followed that with, “I worked on my daddy’s ranch.”  Well, it was like hitting the lotto, because every farm boy who reported aboard any ship I ever sailed on was a good hand.  He got along, didn’t mind any kind of work, could be counted on, got into mischief but stayed out of trouble.  Oh, we got our fair share of good sailors from Urban America as well, but it was never a sure thing.  Farm kids were a sure thing.

By the way, I’m not the only one to recognize that farm-culture builds great kids.  I’ve read a number of accounts similar to mine; Wendel Berry complained that corporate America had exploited the farming community, whisking away their very capable children to big cities promising large salaries.  I don’t recall any farm kids walking up the brow on my last ship.  Maybe corporate got them all.  There aren’t many left here in farm country either if my neighborhood is any indication.

So, add to the list of things this farm contributes to this community – a long laundry list that includes safe places for the little wild things, food fit for anyone’s children, a pastoral setting that gives lift to the soul, etc.  And, we have also contributed two wonderful kids.  One is holding down a full time job, plus two part time gigs while doing a good job of raising a young son.  The other is taking over farm operations and through her marketing skills and energy is helping small farms be successful farms.  I’m quite proud of them both.

 You are all very welcome.

Regards,

Steve
